O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. She also guest starred on a number of other shows and was a part of made for television and independent movies. Her debut role on television was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary on the ABC drama NYPD Blue from 1993 through the year 1996. The actress was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performances by the cast of a drama show.
