O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her vocal ability. Her performance was highly applauded by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and second lowest. They were stunned by the decision and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
